The 2024 edition of Houston Restaurant Weeks is almost upon us. The long and blazing month starts on August 1st and runs through September 2nd, packed with the quintessential of Houston: more than 100 of the city’s best restaurants offering specially priced, multi-course brunch, lunch, and dinner menus each summer. It’s an event of magnitude, but it’s also the single largest annual fundraiser for the Houston Food Bank. That’s right: your meal with friends or alone contributes to the city’s largest hunger relief organization!
Diners can choose from numerous choices for both new and well-established places, making it more exciting for foodies year after year. You can even opt for high-end dining rooms, or you can just stop by any of the participating restaurants. Two or three-course set menus (priced at $25 for lunch and brunch, or $39 and $55 for dinner) also allow visitors to enjoy the best the city has to offer, while also giving back to the community and small local businesses.
Save the date and get your calendars out for Houston Restaurant Weeks 2024. Here are some of the places you must visit, the dishes you must try, and feedback from the restaurant owners themselves, think you should know about the food scene in Houston. It’s time to dine out for a good cause while the city delivers on its food-lovers motto of being ‘home of the best food ever’.
Houston Restaurant Weeks 2024:
Houston’s culinary festival – (August 1 – September 2)
During this festival that takes place for an entire month, an extensive list of restaurants take part, offering multi-course meals for brunch, lunch, and dinner priced at $25 for brunch and lunch, $39 for some dinner selections, and $55 for the indulgent prime selections found on the special restaurant weeks 2024 menus. Houston Restaurant Weeks is not only an extravaganza, but the funds raised support a good cause as well, as a portion goes to Houston Food Bank.
More than 200 restaurants have signed up to participate in Houston Restaurant Weeks 2024, and plenty of them can be found in every part of the city, including establishments with a national or international pedigree and others that offer a neighborhood feel (and price tag). Stay tuned for a complete list of the restaurants and their special Houston Restaurant Weeks menu that you will find on the Houston Restaurant Weeks website.
The spots joining it are a mix of old standards that have appeared for years and newcomers – restaurants that I’ve been on the list of participating restaurants, which has grown to nearly 200 from last year’s 161. The classics, such as luxe French bistro Brasserie 19 in River Oaks, are featured for their consistency and deliciousness and are an excellent option for those who tire of restaurants that sometimes change menus and staff, thus becoming strangers to themselves from one year to the next. Brasserie, with its three-course pre-fixe dinner and atmosphere built for people-watching and being seen, dates back to Houston Restaurant Weeks’s first year in 2003. Backstreet Café, another Houston standard, also appears year after year, its menu and ambiance both as fresh and verdant as its signature garden patio.
There is a slew of brunch – and lunch – options at Houston Restaurant Weeks 2024 – and, at $25 for a multi-course meal, you can try your favorites as well as some unique additions to Houston’s culinary landscape. At Xochi, you can experience the innovative Oaxacan cuisine of chef Hugo Ortega with offerings like tlayudas (a parmesan-anchovy topped corn tortilla) or chilaquiles (fried tortillas with mole, barbacoa and sour cream). Or you can pop into Hugo’s for lunch, where a selection of Mexican staples await, such as ceviche and the regional specialty, cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork with achiote paste).
An opportunity for many to try places they’ll never go again on a non-Houston Restaurant Weeks Friday (or Saturday) night, dinner is a steal at $39 for two courses plus a dessert or, better yet, three courses at $55. This year, Brennan’s of Houston is one of the classic Southern restaurants offering a three-course menu including its famous turtle soup and pecan-crusted fish. The elegant restaurant Emmaline, with dishes hewing closer to the Mediterranean, is serving lamb chops and risotto. The whole experience is a showcase for the city’s chefs as well as a great value for diners.
It’s a delicious month, certainly, but Houston Restaurant Weeks is also about giving back to the community. Each meal served during Restaurant Weeks generates a donation to the Houston Food Bank, America’s largest food bank. The funds provide millions of nourishing meals for all the hungry people of the greater Houston area: $3 donated for every fixed-price brunch or lunch enjoyed, $5 donated for every one of the $39 dinners, and $7 donated for every one of the $55 dinners. Diners get to support innovative restaurants while also doing good and feeding hungry people, transactions that extend the satisfaction of eating well ‘beyond the plate’.
Alongside the main dining events, the schedule of Houston Restaurant Weeks 2024 is packed with a couple of charitable events and activities that aim to raise even more awareness and add more funds directly to the Houston Food Bank. I say ‘even more’ because many of these featured events include collaborations with chefs, cooking demonstrations, and specially curated tasting menus. This year, for example, includes the ‘Inaugural Kickoff Dinner’ at The Post Oak Hotel, where guests can enjoy appetizer-sized samples from various restaurants while mingling with chefs and fellow foodies.
